On Tuesday, October 5, we will be preparing and serving a hot lunch at Mathewson Park Apartments (behind the post office in Factoryville). We will also be painting pumpkins with the senior citizens who reside there. We may also have a sing-a-long, if time permits. We will meet at 12:15pm in Patrick Hall and we will return by 2:00pm. Come and join us!
On Wednesday, October 6, the AmeriCorps Scholars in Service to PA (SISPA) are invited to help Wendy Kramer and Laura Hughes with a Career and College Exploration Day for high school students. AmeriCorps Scholars are invited to meet Laura and Wendy at Evans Hall at 9:15am to greet the students as they arrive for this special day. You will distribute information packets to each high school student in Evans Dining Hall. From 9:30-10”30am, there will be presentations made by President Boehm, Dr. Bob Perkins and Kathryn Reilly. Then there will be some ice breakers.
At 10:30 – 11:00am, Mary Smirne, Wendy Kramer and Laura Hughes will be doing a Learning Styles Presentation in Evans Hall. At 11am, the students will break into smaller groups. Group One will meet with Rhea Duke in the Library Vo-Ed Lab. Group Two will meet with Pat Henneforth in Harris Hall Room 407. Group Three will meet at Harris Hall Room 201 with Tessa Wright. Group 4 will meet with Laura Hughes at Patrick Hall. AmeriCorps Scholars are invited to help the students to find their way around campus to the location where they will be working on the Discover Career Exploration Program. At 11:30am, the high school students will be taking a tour of the campus. You may be able to help the students to meet with their tour guide from Admissions. At 12:15-1:00pm, the high school students will be enjoying lunch in the Cafeteria and in the President’s Dining Room on the top floor of Hibbard Campus Center. AmeriCorps Scholars are invited to mingle with the student during lunch and during the Mini Career and Major Fair. Vicki Stanavitch, Justin Kraky, Patti Davis, Ward Roe will be meeting with the students to share with them what the various majors offer at Keystone College. At l:00 – 1:15pm, Lucas Taylor will be making a presentation about Student Activities in Evans Dining Hall At 1:25-1:30pm the students will be boarding buses to return to their high schools. On Thursday, October 7, at 9:30am, Liz Ratchford from the Shade Tree Commission will be meeting with children from the Lackawanna Trail Elementary Center to plant daffodil bulbs. If you would like to help with this outdoor project, you should let me know by Wednesday, October 6. Liz is looking for five or six good helpers. If you can come for one hour, please let me know. I will meet you at Patrick Hall at 9:15am and we will travel together to Ray’s Market to plant daffodil bulbs. It should be fun! If you are coming to help, I recommend that you wear sneakers and comfortable clothing.
On Thursday, October 7, from 12:30-2:00pm is the Council of Clubs Meeting in Library 204. If you are a club officer, you are invited to attend. Each club must have at least one officer in attendance for the club to continue receiving funding. I will also come to this meeting. At the upcoming Council on Clubs Meeting, we will be discussing the Homecoming Parade. The theme for this year’s Homecoming Day Parade is “History from 1868.” Before we meet with the Council on Clubs, I would like to know what ideas you have for our float and for our theme. One suggestion that would certainly be a good way to emphasize what our clubs are all about is to dress as “Service Leaders” from 1868 to the present day. For example, one person might want to be Martin Luther King, Jr. and another person might want to be Mother Teresa. Someone else might be Nelson Mandella, Sidney Poitier, John Muir, Teddy Roosevelt, Franklin Roosevelt, President Ned Boehm, First Lady Regina Boehm, Maria Montessouri, John Kennedy, Bill Gates, Amelia Earhart, Rosa Parks, Walt Disney (or Mickey Mouse).What do you think of the possibility of our float representing “Service Leaders” throughout history? Let’s talk some more and see what we come up with as a group! You can also e-mail me your ideas or stop by my office in Patrick Hall to talk about your ideas. By Thursday, October 7, we will need to have our theme for the Council of Clubs meeting.
On Monday, October 11, there is no school. Do we want to work on cleaning out the Community Garden? Do we want to work on our float and our costumes and our decorations for Homecoming Day? Do we want to book the culinary lab and bake some cupcakes for our fundraiser?
On Tuesday, October 12, we will travel to the Griffin Pond Animal Shelter to walk the dogs and pet the cats. Meet at Patrick Hall at 12:15pm and return by 2:00pm.
On Thursday, October 14, we will be working on our costumes, our decorations and our float for Homecoming Day Parade. Meet at Patrick Hall at 12:15pm and return by 2:00pm
On Saturday, October 16, all club members are invited to participate in the Homecoming Day Parade. We will meet at Lackawanna Trail Elementary Center Parking lot at 9:30am. The parade will start at 11am at the Lackawanna Trail Elementary Center. We will walk from one end of Factoryville to the other. We will arrive at Keystone College by noon and enjoy a picnic lunch together.
On Tuesday, October 19, we will tour the Bellevue Center of the United Neighborhood Centers with the director, Michael McHale, at 2:30pm. We will meet at Patrick Hall at 1:30pm. We will return by 4:30pm. Please let me know if you are able to participate in this field trip.
On Thursday, October 21, we are planning a trip to the Everhart Museum to learn more about service opportunities at this museum. Meet at Patrick Hall at 12:15pm and return by 2:00pm.
On Saturday, October 23, we will be working side by side with Student Senate on our Adopt-a-Highway Project. Meet in the Hibbard Campus Center at 9:30am to pick up gloves, vests and garbage bags. We will return by 11:30am. We will clean Route 6 for two miles near Keystone College.
On Tuesday, October 26, we will be recruiting students, staff and faculty to donate at the American Red Cross Blood Drive.
On Thursday, October 28, we will co-sponsor the American Red Cross Blood Drive in the Gambal Athletic Center from 9am until 3:00pm. Some students will be able to help unload the trucks and set up the equipment. Some students will be needed to recruit other students, faculty and staff to sign up as donors. Some students will be helping to serve the snacks and to have a fundraiser on this day. Last year we had a book sale and a candle sale on this day as a fundraiser for the American Red Cross
On Thursday, October 28, we will also host the ARC Halloween Dance from 6pm until 8pm in the Giant’s Den on the lowest level of the Hibbard Campus Center. Some students can help with the decorations. Students can also dress up in Halloween costumes and dance with the guests, In addition, we will have tables with arts activities related to the Halloween theme. All are welcome!
